On my day off from work I like to work out at the gym in the morning and then watch Rhema splashing in the indoor pool with her beloved teacher Kate. Rhema’s school is so awesome like that – they take her swimming once a week and she L.O.V.E.S. it.
This morning as I made my way down to the pool I saw Rhema and a few other kids from school getting out of the water and toweling off. It was still early and I wondered what was going on.
Then I overheard a staff member explaining to someone that the pool had to be closed for cleaning because someone had pooped in the pool.
Ohhhh. My heart sank. Rhema’s been super constipated. And sometimes, as other friends can attest, the water serves as that all-natural, super-power, no-fail laxative. Yes, some casual frollicking in the pool can be quite purgative. (Just ask the hotel guests and staff at our nearby Residence Inn.)
As Kate and Rhema were heading into the locker room, I caught up to them.
“Bummer,” she said. “We had to get out because someone pooped in the pool.”
My face lit up.
“You mean…”
She grinned.
“It wasn’t us!!!”
“Woohoo!!!!!!” I said.
We had a brief conversation as Kate held Rhema’s hand and they stood there dripping wet. And I couldn’t stop smiling, thankful that my girl has teachers who care so much that they’re willing to casually chat with me about Rhema’s bowel activity on the side of the pool.
We parted as everyone was making a beeline out of the pool.
I waved at them, gave a little fist pump. “So glad it wasn’t us!” I yelled.
Oh, the things we get to celebrate.
I kind of love it.

I love when that happens. Not the poop part, but the “someone else’s poop” part. Be it literally or figuratively. Glad your little fishy gets to swim.
Yay! I can totally see what you mean with it though! We celebrate the weirdest things, but it’s awesome LOL
Yes, the things we celebrate!! I would have had my hands doing the happy dance next to you if I had been there at the pool! Love it!!
Sweet victory!
Doubled over laughing as I can relate ONE HUNDRED PERCENT to all of this! BTDT. Some days he’s the guilty one. *giggle*
Yes, we celebrate the small victories. So glad she gets to enjoy the water – my boys would love to do that!
Phew, so glad you guys dodge that bullet.
Every time my son and I head to the local pool I can be heard in the changing room “do you need to poo poo? Lets go poo poo then we will swim. Remember no poo poo in the pool”.
LOL
too funny
We can relate! Hi! I’m Jena Sherwood Bolles sister-in-law! We currently live in S. Florida. I’m so glad I found your blog today! I can’t wait to read all your older posts! My daughter is 6.5 with ASD and non-verbal. Unfortunately she was “guilty” of the same crime this weekend. It’s awesome to find someone with the same struggles… and the same HOPE!!!
